His prose is smooth, sensitive, and completely original in its diction and metaphors. Fitzgerald’s writing style,,,,,,,,1.The Plot of The Great Gatsby:,Gatsby is a poor youth from the Midwest. He falls in love with Daisy, a girl from a wealthy family. As a poor lad, Gatsby is too poor to marry her, so Daisy is married to a rich young man named Tom Buchanan. Determined to win Daisy back, Gatsby engages himself in Bootlegging(非法制造私酒) and other illegal activities, thus earns enough money to buy a magnificent mansion. There he hosts dazzling parties every weekend in the hope of attracting the Buchanans to come. By chance his next-door neighbor, Nick Carraway, is Daisy’s relative and he helps Gatsby to make an appointment. They finally come and Gatsby meets Daisy again.,,,,,,,,1.The Plot of The Great Gatsby:,But he finds Daisy is no longer the ideal love of his dream. A sense of loss and disillusionment come over him. Daisy and Tom do not really love each other. In fact, Tom has a mistress by the name of Myrtle Wilson, who is the wife of the owner of a garage. One day Daisy quarrels with Tom and in a fit of anger she drives Gatsby’s car and kills Myrtle in an accident. In order to protect themselves, Daisy and Tom plot to shift the blame on to Gatsby, saying Gatsby has an affair with Myrtle and he kills her eventually. Myrtle’s husband George Wilson breaks into Gatsby’s house and shots him to death. The Buchanans escape, and the only two people attending Gatsby’s funeral are Nick and Gatsby’s father, who reads the news in newspaper.,Daisy Buchanan (黛西•布坎南)– an attractive but shallow and self-absorbed, young debutante and socialite(社会名流), identified as a flapper. She possesses a fierce vitality, is desperate to find refuge from her complacent marriage, but unfortunately this leads to her tragic ending:accidentally killed by Gatsby‘s car driven by Daisy.,,,,,,,,2.distinctive female characters,Though these three women three different classes ,they share the same characteristics of female values under the Jazz Age, that is abandon the traditional female virtues and pursue an extreme material life .They think wealth is the only criteria of success. Women described in that book are ①. all pretty in appearance but hollow inside; ②.money oriented; ③.vainglorious; ④.selfish.,,,,,,,,2.distinctive female characters,The Great Gatsby exposes the representative figures’ human nature of falseness, indifference and selfishness , under the cult of gold-worship’s trend. When the novel makes its character delineation , its words and plots are humorous and vivid. So, you may ask why Francis Scott Fitzgerald described women in such a way.,The root reason of such description is the 1920s’s social climate----money is king.,,,,,,,,Background,The Jazz Age is the nickname in America of the decade of the 1920’s, beginning from 1919 to the Crash at the end of 1929. It refers to the “Twenties” of this century . These ten years were in :,,,,,,,,3.1 Background: Jazz Age,carefree prosperity, a feverish pursuit of pleasuremany went into debt in order to obtain such things bewildering great social changeWWI was just over, new inventions and techniquesurbanization women got right to vote ••• •••,People in that time lived a rich, extravagant, frivolous money making life. But beneath their masks of relaxation, the age was an era of decayed social and moral values and empty pursuit of pleasure. Fitzgerald was both a leading participant in the typically frivolous, carefree, money-making life of the decade and, at the same time, a detached observer of it. He was the most representative novelist of the 1920’s.,,,,,,,,3.1 Background: Jazz Age,It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire .---- F. Scott Fitzgerald这是一个奇迹的时代,一个艺术的时代,一个挥金如土的时代,也是一个充满嘲讽的时代 .,,,,,,,,3.1 Background: Jazz Age,,,,,,Women’s Changing Roles,Two flappers (轻佻女子)dancing the Charleston on the roof of Chicago’s Sherman Hotel (1926).,So,together with these background information,we can understand the features of that time and conclude that the major theme he explorers is the corruption of the American dream. Fitzgerald explores much more than the failure of the American dream because he is more deeply concerned with its total corruption. For example,Gatsby has not achieved his wealth through honest hard work, but through bootlegging and crime.,,,,,,,,The American dream,Thank you!,,,
